Testing Testing 1,2,3 Assessment?
The following Weebly was created for students who wish to become teachers. Please utilize this as a resource for learning and NOT as a quick and easy way to complete an assignment.
Welcome to this weebly:) I am currently a Junior in Family and Consumer Sciences Education. I am taking an assessment course at Iowa State University and I am learning about the different forms of assessment. I am not sure what you may already know about creating assessments but it's not easy. It requires a lot of your time. Do keep in mind that some forms are easier than others, and some don't require as much of your time. There are five forms that I will be covering are below:
1. Multiple Choice
2. True/False
3. Matching
4.Interpretive
5.Short Answer & Essay
Before we get started I want to explain the set up of this weebly. On the left there will be some guidelines (do's or don'ts) on how to create each of the forms of assessment. On the right there will be examples and a link that will connect to a jing that explains the example (s) given. There will also be a section right below that will list my challenges when I was creating questions and how/when I would use that form of assessment. Finally, I will make one big test to show you how to put it all together . Lets get started!!:)

Multiple Choice:Guidelines:
|
Examples:Bad: The biscuit method is:
A) buying canned biscuits from the store B) Baking biscuits until they are golden brown C) Making sure to blend the solid fats together without melting them in order to get layers and creating a well and mixing with a fork. Good: Which of the following methods of mixing involves cutting in fat into the flour mixture? A) Biscuit Method B) Convectional Method C) Muffin Method D) Quick Mix Method |
Wrapping It Up:
This was the hardest for me to learn. I think it was because it was it was the first I tried. It was really hard for me to make these questions higher learning. It was also hard for me to make sure each possible answer was plausible. (No you can't just throw in random words) I would use this for a quick and easy way to gauge where my students are. I can use it to check for understanding in topics where there are many definitions. Here is my jing, for a verbal explanation of multiple choice: http://screencast.com/t/4OY2y7C7qLA
True/False:Guidelines :
|
Examples:Bad: The biscuit method is always called the pastry method because of the layers of flakes that are produced when steam is released.
Good: The biscuit method is also called the pastry method. |
Wrapping It Up:
I hated this kind of assessment when I was in high school. The reason being, they were written terribly. They included questions that probably would have served better as a multiple choice or a short answer question. Granted they could have EASILY made the question better by having the question by a true or false and include a justification. However, that would take more time to grade so most teachers often don't include many of those. One big con with true or false is that its easier to guess. ( 50-50 chance vs 1-4). However, it is faster to make a true and false question assessment and faster to grade. Here is my jing for a verbal description of true/false: http://screencast.com/t/f5BdmA31d2
Matching:Guidelines:
|
Example:Bad:
Directions: Fill in the answer on the right space provided. Word Bank: Muffin Method Biscuit Method Conventional Method 1. _____ This method involves using cold fat that needs to be cut in. 2. _______ _ This method involves creating a well in the middle of dry ingredients. 3.______ This method involves creaming. Good: Directions: Use the words in the word bank to help you answer the following questions. Each option will be used only once. Word Bank: *Muffin Method *Biscuit Method *Conventional Method *Quick Mix Method 1. ______ This method involves using cold fat that needs to be cut into the flour. 2.______ This method involves creating a well in the middle of dry ingredients. 3. ______ This method involves creaming. |
Wrapping It Up:
Personally, I really like matching. It is easy to create a question and you can really mold it to be your own. Challenges I had while creating this kind of assessment was formatting. It takes a bit of time to make a word bank and making sure it looks neat and uniform. I would use this in a multiple of ways. I could use this form of assessment as a assignment ( multiple students could do it together. I think I could even use it as a competition with the whole class. I would have the choices on the board and they would need to run up and put the answer on the appropriate answer ( that was written somewhere in the room). I could time it to see how long we take or maybe split them up as groups:)
Interpretive:Guidelines :
|
Examples:Bad: How many grams of fat does this entire bag have?
OR What is Sodium Bicarbonate? Good: Based on the information provided above, do you think this is a healthy snack. Why or why not? |
Wrapping It Up:
Personally, I hated this form of assessment. It was the hardest for me to make questions for. I think it was because your really need to have a different mind set. You are not asking for recall here, you are trying to see what they ( the students) actually know. Can they draw conclusions? The biggest thing here is that it must be interpretive and for me that was the hardest part. I do like this form of assessment. It is generally a higher learning kind of assessment. I would use it in foods class quite often. A failed recipe and an explanation of what when wrong and how it could be fixed. Here is my verbal description of interpretive: http://screencast.com/t/5oK46HrVWLfl
Short Answer & EssayGuidelines :
|
Examples:Bad: Directions: Answer the following questions to the best of your ability.
1. Explain why you need to make a well when making muffins. Good: Directions: Answer the following questions using complete sentences. To recieve full points, there must but a minimum of three sentences. 1. Compare and contrast the muffin and biscuit method. |
Wrapping It Up:
These are not difficult to write. They are however hard to grade. You will find that some students will give the bare minimum and others will give you an entire page. I love that you can actually tell how much your students know because they really can't guess. I would use these as a big picture kind of assignment at the end of a unit or during a final. Here is the verbal description to short answer and essay: http://screencast.com/t/sxw8uUGTgu6
Table of Specifications:
Table of specifications are useful for tracking lower and level level questions. Remember, your assessments should NOT have more than 40% of the questions be lower level questions. Assessments are not meant to trick students, but rather track progress. Below is a good example of what a table of specifications might look like.

Wrapping up Assessments:
Good Luck!! The following is my final jing with a verbal explanation of the big picture:) Please remember that as educators we do not assess our students merely for the purpose of assessing but to try and understand how our students are faring in our classes. You don't know what needs to change until you know there is a problem.
